A collection of acclaimed street photographer Vivian Maier’s belongings, including photographs as well as vintage dresses, hats and jewelry, is being auctioned for charity. The collection is currently owned by John Maloof, who discovered Maier’s work when he purchased a box of old photographs for $400, notes Digital Camera World. Proceeds from the sale, being handled by Heritage Auctions, will benefit the Soi Dog Foundation, a Thailand-based organization that rescues dogs and cats across Asia, and other groups.

Associated Press photographer Fatima Shbair has seen conflict and violence in Gaza since she was a young girl, and when Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack triggered Israel’s campaign of retaliation, she spent several days reporting from her hometown of Gaza City. As Israeli forces advanced, she moved with her family to Rafah, in southern Gaza, and is now based in Dubai, notes the AP. Now, as a ceasefire raises hopes for the end of the conflict, Shbair is looking back at two years of war through some of her most poignant images.

The Smithsonian Institution, which has repeatedly been attacked by the Trump administration, has suffered yet one more blow as the continuing government shutdown forced it close its Washington, D.C,-based network of museums for the foreseeable future. It is not the first museum in Washington, D.C. to shutter because of the shutdown, notes Art News: The National Gallery of Art has also been closed. How the Smithsonian’s forthcoming programming will be impacted remains uncertain.
