Passings: Hugues Oyarzabal, Surfing Star Who Rode With a Camera, Dies at 39

Hugues Oyarzabal, one of Europe’s most accomplished surfers and among the first to record spectacular feats from inside the curl of a wave using digital cameras, died on Feb. 21 at his home in Biarritz, France, notes The New York Times. He was 39. His parents said that the bipolar disorder from which he suffered since childhood “took its toll.” Oyarzabal surfed some of the most challenging waves in the world, from the Basque coasts of northern Spain and southwestern France to Southern Africa and beyond.   Read the full Story >>

Books: A New Edition of Curtis's 'North American Indian'

Between 1907 and 1930, photographer Edward S. Curtis published The North American Indian, a 20-volume collection of portfolios and texts featuring over 2,000 illustrations and ethnographic records. In the decades since, the ambitious work has been lauded, avidly collected and also criticized for romanticizing Indigenous peoples. Now Taschen is releasing Edward S. Curtis: The North American Indian: The Complete Portfolios, with over 700 photographs across 20 portfolios and 696 pages.   Read the full Story >>

Tech News: Google Says Its Pixel 9a Is the Best Camera in its Class

Google has announced its latest budget smartphone, the Pixel 9a, and the tech giant claims the new model offers an ideal balance of features and price. “Despite that,” notes DP Review, “the team acknowledged that the camera is what draws people to the Pixel lineup, so Google says it aimed to provide quality image-making features on the budget-focused device, claiming it is the best camera in its class.” The 9a features a wide-angle main camera and an ultra-wide. Exhibitions: Lynsey Addario and Laetitia Vancon 'Inside Ukraine'

Through April 20, the Leica Store & Gallery New York is featuring the exhibition “Inside Ukraine,” a look at the ongoing war in Ukraine as captured by two renowned photojournalists, Lynsey Addario and Laetitia Vançon. Their work, notes the gallery, “offers a stark portrayal of how daily life continues amidst the devastation of conflict.” On April 3, former New York Time Magazine Director of Photography Kathy Ryan will moderate a discussion with Addario and Vançon about their images and experiences covering the war.   Read the full Story >>
