The Washington Post reports that more than 1,000 people have been detained in Turkey in recent days in a crackdown on escalating demonstrations that broke out after the arrest of Istanbul’s mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, a key rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Pressure on journalists covering protests has grown, adds the Media and Law Studies Association. Among those arrested: prominent photojournalist Bülent Klç; Kurtulu Ar, a photographer for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality; and AFP photojournalist Yasin Akgül.

Nona Faustine, a photographer whose self-portraits explored conditions afflicting Black women across time, died on March 20 at age 48, reports Art News. Faustine frequently photographed herself in ways that considered how her body acted as a record of histories of exploitation and empowerment, notes AN. Her work balanced critical reexaminations of White violence and settler colonialism with powerful tributes to ancestors whose stories had long been suppressed, ignored, or undervalued, adds Hyperallergic.

Flowers remain an essential subject for artists, notes London’s Saatchi Gallery, which features the massive exhibition “Flowers—Flora in Contemporary Art & Culture” through May 5.
