Cities are constantly in flux, but, notes Colossal, photographer Keita Morimoto invites us to linger in their transitions a little longer: “The artist renders corner stores, vending machines, and lampposts that illuminate spaces that might otherwise go unnoticed. Either unoccupied or inhabited by just one or two people, Morimoto’s scenes are dimly lit but not eerie and invoke the environments most of us engage with for just a moment,” notes the website. “The anonymous, liminal spaces in my paintings echo the feeling of never fully belonging,” Morimoto says.   Read the full Story >>

Close-Up: The Bob and Diane Fund Award Celebrates 10 Years of Bringing Understanding About Alzheimer's and Dementia

We noted earlier this year that New York-based photographer Jason Crowley was named the winner of the 2024 Bob and Diane Fund Award, a $5,000 grant that supports visual storytellers -- photographers, video producers, multimedia artists -- who produce work about Alzheimer's and dementia. Follow-Up: AFP Demands Turkey Release Photographer

Agence-France Presse (AFP) is demanding that Turkish authorities release photojournalist Yasin Akgül, who, as we noted earlier this week, was arrested while covering protests in Istanbul. “Yasin Akgül was not part of the protest,” said Fabrice Fries, AFP’s chairman, in a letter addressed to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “As a journalist, he was covering one of the many demonstrations that have been organized in the country since Wednesday March 19. He has taken exactly 187 photographs since the start of the protests, each one a witness to his work as a journalist.”   Read the full Story >>

Books: The 'Indescribable Magic' of Australia's Landscapes

Despite growing up in Australia, photographer Michele Burns has spent most of her career abroad, capturing images of Alpine peaks, serene bamboo forests and Mediterranean coastlines. So when she set out to photograph Australia in 2022, she didn’t quite realize how enormous it was. Focusing on the “vibrant color palette” of Australia’s landscapes, Burns traversed the country.
