Close-Up Photographer of the Year Monday February 3, 2025
After releasing its shortlist last autumn, the Close-Up Photographer of the Year contest has now revealed the winners of its 2024 competition. The top prize winner (and winner of the Insects category) is Russian photographer Svetlana Ivanenko for her photo “Clash of the Titans,” an epic shot of two stag beetles battling for dominance. “For a brief period in summer, stag beetles (Lucanus cervus) engage in fierce battles for mating rights,” Ivanenko notes. “They inhabit oak forests, making them elusive. I traveled 700 kilometers to witness this captivating event.”

The Alexia 2025 grant competition for professional and student photographers is now open; Submissions will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. ET, February 17. The grants are aimed at helping visual storytellers produce projects that inspire change and foster understanding by addressing significant topics around the world. The recipient of The Alexia Vision professional grant receives $20,000 to produce a proposed project as well as a Sony camera and lens. The recipient of The Alexia Vision student grant receives $1,000 and a Sony camera/lens to advance a proposed project, as well as a fellowship for tuition and fees to audit three courses during a semester at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and automatic acceptance into the Eddie Adams Workshop.

In a newly issued report, the U.S, Copyright Office has clarified its stance on AI-generated artwork, though the thorny question of what is and is not copyrightable remains open to interpretation.
