Since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Russia has been targeting both Ukrainian and foreign journalists covering the conflict, notes Reporters Without Borders (RSF). which has recorded nearly150 journalists who have fallen victim to Russian abuses while doing their work, based on information collected with the support of RSF's Ukrainian partner, the Institute of Mass Information. In 2024, two media professionals lost their lives while covering the war, bringing the total number of reporters killed since 2022 to 13, notes RSF, while 18 Ukrainian journalists are currently detained by Russia.

Underwater Photographer of the Year Thursday February 27, 2025
Spanish photographer Alvaro Herrero has been named the top winner of the 2025 Underwater Photographer of the Year competition for his image “Radiant Bond,” which captures a mother humpback whale accompanying her calf to the surface for its first breath. “Every year, during the southern winter, I travel to French Polynesia to photograph these majestic animals. My favorite time of day is the early morning, because the light is soft and angled, allowing me to find the perfect angle to clearly define the shape of these animals in blue,” notes Herrero.

After Photo Plus trade show collapsed and its follow-up, Create NYC, also failed, the future of photography-focused events in New York City looked bleak, but B&H has proven the opposite with its Bild Expo show, which, notes PetaPixel, brings together manufacturers, photo enthusiasts and “a who’s-who of the biggest names in the industry." First launched in 2023, Bild Expo will return to the Jacob Javits Center in New York City on June 17 and 18. B&H says it will feature more than 100 speakers and hands-on demonstrations, as well as exclusive deals from more than 250 brands.
