The cost of top-tier cinema cameras can be a serious barrier for many filmmakers, but Arri’s latest move changes that equation, notes DP Review: The company is making its iconic Alexa 35 cine cam $30,000 more accessible with the introduction of the new Alexa 35 Base model. By offering a lower-cost base model with an innovative licensing system, filmmakers can now step into the Arri Alexa 35 world reducing the upfront cost – and only pay for the features they need when they need them. But for many, the Base model’s core features — ProRes recording up to 60fps in 4K— will be more than enough.

1839 Awards Tuesday February 11, 2025
Named after a watershed year in the history of photography, the 1839 Awards celebrate the art of photography with pro and non-pro competitions. The winner of this year’s professional prize is Logan White for his image “Hearts Content Road, Gianna,” which, notes My Modern Met, “explores the duality of fantasy through a playful trompe l'oeil composition.” Photographer Matthew Portch wins the non-crofessional competition with his image, “Buried Car, CA,” part of a series examining forgotten American landscapes.

In collaboration with Verizon and the National Disability Leadership Alliance (NDLA), Getty Images has announced the $20,000 Disability in Focus: Navigating Work Life creative grant, aimed at improving the representation of the disability community in workplace. Photographers and videographers are invited to reimagine how the disability community is represented in professional settings. “Too often, visuals portray the disability community in limited, domestic or familial contexts, leaving a gap showcasing the vital contributions people with disabilities bring to the workforce,” notes Getty.

Canon's recently released financial results for the fiscal year 2024 show a decrease in operating profit and net income year-over-year but strong performance in the imaging sector, notes PetaPixel. The company had net sales of $28.5 billion last year, up 7.9% from 2023. However, operating profit fell 25.5% to $1.77 billion. Looking specifically at imaging, total sales increased by 8.8% year-over-year. Canon also recently announced it is the number-one mirrorless camera brand, and that the Canon EOS R6 Mark II was the best-selling full-frame camera in the U.S. in 2024.
