Demand for digital cameras in China grew for the first time in 7 years in 2024, notes Nikkei Asia, buoyed by Gen-Z users who are dissatisfied with their smartphone cameras. Digital camera shipments totaled 8.49 million units, up 10 percent, according to data released by the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA). Demand for social-media optimized models boosted shipments and prices, adds NA. Japanese manufacturers are also shipping more high-end cameras to China that sell for more money and yield better profits, adds PetaPixel.

DPG Masters Underwater Imaging Competition Wednesday February 12, 2025
Canadian videographer Eiko Jones is the 2024 DPG Masters Underwater Imaging Competition overall winner (and winner of the Short Film category) for The Journey—a two-minute saga that, he notes, showcases the “incredible journey the salmon of Vancouver Island’s Campbell and Quinsam Rivers take in the completion of their life cycle.” The contest, organized by DivePhotoGuide, also featured eight other categories: Traditional, Macro, Wide Angle, Over-Under, Conservation, Blackwater, Compact and Portfolio.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to fund photographer Nick Ut’s legal fees as he plans a defamation lawsuit against the makers of a documentary that asserts he did not take the famous Napalm Girl photograph during the Vietnam War. Screened at the Sundance Film Festival, the controversial documentary, titled The Stringer, claims that Thanh Nghe, a driver for NBC, took the photo instead. Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist David Kennerly, a friend of Ut, launched the fundraiser to “support Nick in his fight against the producer of a film that defamed Nick.”
