Yan Morvan, a revered war photographer and chronicler of the lives of people on the fringes of society, died of skin cancer on Sept. 20. He was 70. “Though he hated violence, Morvan reported from more than 20 war zones, including Uganda, Mozambique, Kurdistan, Northern Ireland, Rwanda, Kosovo, Ukraine and Lebanon, winning a Robert Capa award and two World Press Photo awards,” notes The Guardian. He was injured numerous times, narrowly escaped a car-bombing, came close to death in Lebanon, and was held under duress for three weeks by a violent gang in Paris.

For the last few years, Meta has faced criticism from investors for spending on future-facing projects like artificial intelligence, chatbots and the metaverse. Now, notes The New York Times, Meta is boasting that at least some of those investments are starting to pay off. The company recently reported double-digit revenue and profit growth for the third quarter, driven largely by advancements in its systems for advertisement targeting and suggesting relevant posts and videos to users.

The photos and videos you store on your Android device can reveal a lot about you, notes Android Authority, so Google is introducing an update that aims to safeguard your images from malicious or poorly developed Android apps. Google is contacting developers of Android apps that request broad access to photos and videos and telling them they need to adopt the Android Photo Picker, a tool introduced in 2022 that allows apps to access specific photos or videos that the user selects, rather than their entire media library.
