Legal Brief: Artist Sues After US Rejects Copyright for AI-Generated Image

A Colorado artist has asked a federal court  to reverse a U.S. Copyright Office decision that rejected copyright protection for an award-winning image he created with artificial intelligence. The artist, Jason M. Allen, said in a lawsuit filing that he should receive a copyright for his image "Theatre D'opera Spatial" because it was an expression of his creativity. In 2022, Allen applied for a copyright registration covering the image, which won the Colorado State Fair's art competition that year. The US Copyright Office rejected Allen's application after he refused to disclaim the parts of the image made with the AI image generator Midjourney, notes Reuters.   Read the full Story >>

Scientists say it forms due to a glut of chemical waste from intensive farming that spills into the sea, notes Radio France International, which spotlights the work of a young photographer who is exposing the problem with unusual and surprisingly beautiful work. Social News: Facebook Says It Paid Content Creators $2B This Year

Meta says that creators have earned over $2 billion on Facebook this year, and in that time, payouts for Reels and other short videos has grown over 8o percent. Since Facebook began offering monetization opportunities in 2017, the company has paid more than 4 million creators, notes TechCrunch. TC adds, however, that Facebook’s stats “still pale in comparison to YouTube, which paid creators $70 billion over the last three years through its partner program.” Meta is now inviting 1 million creators who are already monetizing on Facebook to join the beta for the Content Monetization hub.
