As the Australian Senate prepared to hold an inquiry into the impact of social media, economists were presented with new findings about the economic value of sites like Instagram and TikTok that point in a shocking direction, notes the Nieman Lab. The findings suggest social media is worth less to us than the zero we pay for it—that we would be better off without it. A study of US college students suggest that many social media users agree, notes Nieman Lab: Most of the TikTok users (64%) and almost half of the Instagram users (48%) were prepared to pay to be off them, so long as others were off them. Art News: Chinese Photography Museum Founder Under Investigation

The founder of a photography museum in China has been taken away by authorities and is currently under investigation, prompting questions about the future of the private institution. Xie Zilong, founder of Xie Zilong Photography Museum (XPM) in Changsha, the capital and the largest city of Hunan province of China, was detained on July 28, reports Artnet. Xie’s company, LBX Pharmacy, posted an announcement of the incident at the Shanghai Stock Exchange on July 30. On View: Paula Bronstein at Visa Pour l'Image

Award-winning photojournalist Paula Bronstein’s four-decade career is being celebrated with an exhibition at this year’s Visa pour l’Image  photojournalism festival in Perpignan, France (Aug. 31 to Sept. 15). The Guardian spotlights one of the images Included in the retrospective: a 2017 photo of Rohingya refugees fleeing from Myanmar into Bangladesh.
