Google has released an updated version of its AI image generator to everyone in the U.S., and, notes PetaPixel, it’s free to use. The Imagen 3 image generator, first announced in May, will be available via Google’s AI Test Kitchen service. Users type in a prompt and wait for about 30 seconds until the pictures begin to appear. Google says the model “is preferred over other state-of-the-art models at the time of evaluation,” and PP agrees that Imagen 3 “does appear to be a quality text-to-image model that rivals Midjourney or OpenAI’s DALL-E.”

Some images generators have applied guardrails to prevent misuse by bad players. Elon Musk is going in another direction, notes The Verge. The new updated version of the Grok AI chatbot at X (formerly Twitter) will make pictures of everything from Taylor Swift in lingerie to Kamala Harris with a gun, notes The Verge, adding, “With US elections approaching and X already under scrutiny from regulators in Europe, it’s a recipe for a new fight over the risks of generative AI.” Grok will tell you it has guardrails, “but these probably aren’t real rules,” adds TV.

After decades of photographing wildlife, Pete Arnold of Cheyenne, Wyoming, was trying to figure out how to catch birds in their best moments — without having to sit for hours. “It’s kind of a drag to sit there and wait” for perfect picture, he tells Cowboy State Daily. A few years ago, he started putting a GoPro on a tripod by roadkill big game carcasses, a magnet for raptors and other birds. He replicated that process near burrowing owl holes on the eastern edge of Cheyenne and struck gold on June 28.
