The Paris Olympics is a huge operation for Getty Images, which is the official photographer at the event: A team of 140 photographers and editors are shooting and editing more than five million images through the Closing Ceremony on August 11. Redshark recently spoke with one of Getty’s photographers, Patrick Smith, about what gear he takes to the games. “The essentials are three Canon R3 mirrorless camera bodies and an assortment of lenses,” notes Smith.

Robert Miller has been promoted to Director of Photography, the newspaper has announced. Since 2016, Miller has served as The Post’s Deputy Director of Photography, overseeing photography for National, International, Financial, Metro and the Investigative departments. His teams have contributed to award-winning projects, including Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and the 2024 Pulitzer Prize-winning story on AR-15 rifles. He began his career at The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., where he worked as a staff photojournalist.

Since 1950, a parcel of land hidden away in the woods of western New York state has been home to a Ukrainian summer camp called Novyi Sokil. The history of the camp—and the Ukrainian scouting organization Plast—is told at NPR by photographer Andrea Wenglowskyj, who attended Novyi Sokil in the 1980s and 1990s. “Plast leaders have persevered through attacks on Ukrainian culture for over a century, because the desire to exist peacefully as a community, celebrate traditions and speak their own language is a human right,” she writes.

Vital Impacts Tuesday July 30, 2024
Vital Impacts, the non-profit founded by photographer Ami Vital and journalist Eileen Mignoni to champion conservation efforts through vsual storytelling, is now offering one $20,000 grant and six $5,000 grants to support documentary projects that spotlight solutions-based environmental narratives. Recipients will have the opportunity to work on their projects over 12 months, In addition, Vital Impacts will select 10 emerging photographers to participate in an intensive mentorship program and will invite all applicants to participate in an online mentorship series. Deadline to apply: Sept. 15.
