Hurricane Beryl brought wind and rain to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands as it tore through the Caribbean and headed toward Mexico and Texas. Beryl became the earliest Category 5 hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic, noted CNN, which featured images of the hurricane’s destruction, with photography from Joe Raedle (Getty Images); Paola Chiomante (Reuters); Samir Aponte (Reuters) and others. A Category 5 — the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale — has sustained winds of 157 mph or greater. NPR also had photos.

London's Royal Museums Greenwich received 3,500 entries for its Astronomy Photographer Of The Year 2024 contest—arguably the biggest prize for astrophotographers, notes Forbes—and now has revealed the 31 shortlisted entries. They range from visuals from the Geminid meteor shower to an aurora in the shape of a dragon to ancient supernova remnants, adds My Modern Met. The winners of the competition’s nine categories, two special prizes and the overall winner will be announced on Sept. 12. The top winner will receive a $12,600 prize.

“South Korean democracy began in Gwangju. I just did what little I could for its citizens.” So says Na Kyung Taek, who in 1980 shot a black-and-white photo of a blood-splattered student being clubbed by a soldier, exposing the brutal suppression of a movement in Gwangju, South Korea in opposition to the military junta led General Chun Doo-hwan. Chun’s rule ended in 1988, and now many in South Korea support a Constitutional revision to sanctify Gwangju’s role in the country’s democratization. Still, most have never heard of Na, notes The Nw York Times.
