Passings: Thomas Hoepker, Renowned Magnum Photographer, Dies at 88

Thomas Hoepker, the longtime Magnum photographer known for his pictures of Muhammad Ali, the Berlin Wall, and a controversial image of onlookers in Brooklyn seemingly unbothered by the smoke of the Twin Towers on 9/11, died on July 10 in Santiago, Chile. He was 88. Hoepker’s career spanned decades of a golden era for magazine feature photography, beginning in the 1960s, when he won assignments to shoot a long road trip across America, notes The New York Times. Exhibitions: Tyler Mitchell Builds His Own Utopia in Atlanta

In 2018, photographer Tyler Mitchell was just 23 years old when he made history as the first Black man ever to shoot a Vogue cover. His work has since been featured in museums around the world, but he tells W magazine that a show at his hometown’s High Museum of Art in Atlanta has always been a “goal of mine, since I started taking art and photography seriously.” That exhibition, “Tyler Mitchell: Idyllic Space” (through Dec. 1), explores themes such as family lineage, play, companionship, the natural world, and domestic spaces, notes the museum.   Read the full Story >>

Media Watch: Outdoor Photographer is Gone. But Now Theres Wild Eye Magazine

A new quarterly publication, Wild Eye magazine, is the “spiritual successor” of gone-but-not-forgotten Outdoor Photographer, declares PetaPixel. The first “virtual” issue of Wild Eye—to be published in September—will be entirely free for anyone who signs up on the magazine’s website.There will be four print (and digital) issues in 2025.
