Industry News: Digital Camera Ownership in Japan Drops Below 50 Percent

According to data from Japan's Cabinet Office, mere 48.6 percent of households now own a standalone digital camera, down from a peak of 77 percent in 2012, while smartphone penetration has risen to 93.8 percent. The figures clearly illustrate where consumers are spending their yen, painting “a grim picture for the once-mighty digital camera industry,” notes Digital Camera World. A photograph of a girl in a green dress seen against the backdrop of a sea filled with debris is the top winner of the 2024 Mangrove Photography Awards. Taken by Indian photographer Supratim Bhattacharjee, the photo shows the aftermath of a cyclone in the Sundarbans, a huge mangrove forest at the delta of the Ganges River, notes CNN.
