Passings: Melinda Wickman Swearingen, Whose Images Defined Outlaw Country, Dies at 76

Melinda Wickman Swearingen, a photographer who captured iconic images of the Texas outlaw country music scene, died on March 18, reports The Austin Chroncle. She was 76. Born in Dallas, Swearingen moved to Austin, Texas, in the late 1960s. As a budding photographer, she documented political events at the University of Texas, earning credits in Time and Newsweek magazines, and by the 1970s she began photographing musicians. Swearingen’s most famous images adorned “Wanted! The Outlaws,” the 1976 compilation album that brought together Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Jessi Colter, and Tompall Glaser.   Read the full Story >>

Nature Watch: He Documented Every Mile of a Threatened River

More than 15 years ago, Pete McBride set out to document all 1,450 miles of the threatened Colorado River, hoping to underscore why its preservation is essential, notes Outside magazine.  “I’ve known this river my entire life. I grew up near its headwaters and learned to swim in alpine lakes and tributaries fed by Rocky Mountain snowmelt,” McBride writes. In western cities like Phoenix, Denver, and Las Vegas, the river provides 40 to 90 percent or more of the water that pours out of residents’ faucets, McBride notes.   Read the full Story >>

Nikon’s newly announced Nikkor Z 28-400mm F4-8 VR, a superzoom lens with a 14.2x zoom range designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras, is the company’s most versatile lens yet, notes PetaPixel. Nikon touts the lens as a “must-have” zoom for travel, sports, and backyard wildlife photography and says it meet the needs of both photo and video users, adds DP Review. The lens features Nikon's vibration reduction (VR) technology, delivering 5.0 stops of image stabilization at 400mm and up to 5.5 stops using Nikon's Synchro VR technology when paired with Nikon cameras that have in-body stabilization, including the Z8 and Z9.   Read the full Story >>
