In Focus: Journalism School Defends Controversial Photo Prize

The Pictures of the Year International competition sparked outrage  recently by awarding a top prize to Associated Press for coverage of the Israel-Hamas war. The focus of the controversy was an image of the dead body of German-Israeli citizen killed by Hamas terrorists on Oct. 7, 2023. Now, notes KRCG, members of the University of Missouri School of Journalism’s Reynolds Journalism Institute, which administers the competition, are defending their decision. “While we understand the reactions to the pictures, we also believe that photojournalism plays an important role in bringing attention to the harsh realities of war,” wrote Institute Director Lynden Steele in a statement.   Read the full Story >>

Addendum: Lego Asks California Police Department to Stop Putting Lego Head on Mug Shots

Toy company Lego has asked a Southern California police department to refrain from using the company's toy heads to hide the identities of suspects in photos shared on social media. The Murrieta Police Department began using Lego heads to cover people's faces in November 2022, notes NBC News. The edited photos drew attention recently after the department posted a statement titled, "Why the covered faces?" on Facebook. "We are currently exploring other methods to continue publishing our content in a way that is engaging and interesting to our followers," notes a police department spokesman.   Read the full Story >>

State of the Art: OpenAI's Sora Drops its First Music Video

OpenAI still hasn't divulged when Sora will be available — or details about its training data — but that hasn't stopped the company from cultivating intrigue by releasing a music video created by the AI video generator. OpenAI recently posted the music video for a song called "Worldweight" by indie musician August Kamp.
