Art News: Philanthropist Lisa Saltzman Launches Annual Prize for Photographers

Lisa Saltzman, a patron in the worlds of art and design, is launching a new prize dedicated to recognizing emerging photographers. The Saltzman Prize, established in partnership with the Center for Photography at Woodstock, includes a $10,000 prize and a solo exhibition at the PHOTOFAIRS New York art fair in September, notes Artsy, which spotlights the shortlist for the inaugural prize. The nominees include New York–based Caroline Tompkins, Ghanaian photographer Eric Gyamfi, Chinese artist Hailun Ma, and upstate New York–based photographer Rory Mulligan.   Read the full Story >>

What We Learned This Week: Dmitry Markov, Who Captured Russian Life with an iPhone, Dies at 42

Russian photographer Dmitry Markov, known for documenting the gritty realities of everyday life in his country with an iPhone, died on Friday, Feb. 16 at the age of 42, according to media in his hometown of Pskov. Passings: Lou Krasky, Who Covered Hurricanes, Golf and Presidents, Dies at 86

Lou Krasky, an Associated Press photographer who took photos of presidents and the pope as well as hurricanes, golf tournaments, car racing stars and space shuttle launches throughout his more than 35 years with the news service, died on Feb. 8. He was 86, notes AP. Krasky learned photography in the US Navy and went to work for AP  in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1968. His ability to make newspaper photos look like art earned him the nicknames “Maestro” and “The Artiste” from his colleagues.   Read the full Story >>

See It Now: When Spike Jonze Met Bjork

In 1995, Spike Jonze met Björk for the first time at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, before shooting their iconic “It’s Oh So Quiet” music video. Jonze also shot thousands of photographs of her for now-defunct Detour magazine, only six of which were published. Now  a number of his unseen photos of the musician are collected in a zine curated by designer-restaurateur Humberto Leon and distributed by We Transfer, available to download for free, as well as at an exhibition in Leon’s LA restaurant.  Dazed has the story.   Read the full Story >>
