Artists have secured a small but meaningful win in their lawsuit against generative artificial intelligence art generators, notes Art News. in what’s considered the leading case over the uncompensated and unauthorized use of billions of images downloaded from the internet to train AI systems, a federal judge refused to acknowledge that the AI companies can avail themselves of free speech protections and stated that the case is in the public interest. U.S. District Judge William Orrick rebuffed arguments from StabilityAI and Midjourney that they are entitled to a First Amendment defense.

Recently, Projections spotlighted coverage of the Ukraine war by five photojournalists—Ken Cedeno, Svet Jacqueline, Alan Chin, Wolfgang Schwan and William Patrick. “Once again, we witnessed the incredible courage and fortitude on the Ukrainian population. The imagery and the compelling narration from these world-renowned photojournalists left us speechless,” notes Projections organizer Frank Meo. In photographer Zhang Xiao’s images of the Shehuo festival, an ancient celebration still observed in parts of northern China during the Lunar New Year, rural life “comes alive with something altogether more fantastical,” notes CNN. Villagers dressed as cranes, roosters and mythical lions pose for portraits standing amid crops or in fallow farmland. Zhang says he wanted to capture the surreal “disconnect” between people’s everyday lives and the mythical personas they assumed. The work in collected in the Aperture book Community Fire.
