State of the Art: Meta Oversight Boards Calls for Revisions to 'Incoherent' Deepfake Rules

Meta’s Oversight Board, an external advisory group set up to review its moderation decisions on Facebook and Instagram, has called on the company to rewrite its rules against fake videos, notes TechCrunch. The call came in a decision regarding a fake video of President Biden that made the rounds on social media last year. In its decision, the Oversight Board agreed with Meta’s choice to leave the video online but calls the relevant policy “incoherent.” Meanwhile, notes The New York Times, Meta is calling for an industry-wide effort to adopt standardized labeling for AI-generated content.   Read the full Story >>

Tech News: Phase One is Selling the XC Camera Without the $46K Back

Last June, Phase One announced its medium format travel camera, the XC, billing it as an all-in-one medium-format system that also happened to be the company’s most compact digitally-integrated camera ever. That set of features did not come cheap though, as the XC retails for $62,490—a price that included an IQ4 digital back. Phase One is finally making the body of the XC available without the IQ4 back, which reduces the cost of the system significantly, bringing the cost down to $20,290. Honor Roll: Underwater Photographer of the Year Winners

Swedish photographer Alex Dawson is the top winner of the 2024 Underwater Photographer of the Year contest for his shot of whale bones left by local hunters under icy Greenland waters. Judges praised the image’s “masterful composition,” saying it invites viewers “to consider our impact on the great creatures of this planet.” Whales dominated the winning pictures of this year’s competition, including two category-winning pictures by Spanish photographer Rafael Fernandez Caballero, notes Dive  magazine.   Read the full Story >>
