Legal Brief: Kat Von D Beats Photographer's Copyright Lawsuit Over Miles Davis Tattoo

A jury has found that celebrity tattoo artist Kat Von D did not violate a photographer’s copyright when she used his portrait of Miles Davis as the basis for a tattoo she put on the arm of a friend, notes Associated Press. The Los Angeles jury deliberated for just over two hours before delivering a verdict on Friday, finding that the  tattoo by the former star of the reality shows Miami Ink and LA Inkwas not similar enough to photographer Jeffrey Sedlik’s 1989 portrait of the jazz legend that she needed to have paid permission. The jurors made the same decision about a drawing Von D made from the portrait, on which she based the tattoo, and to several social media posts she made about the process.   Read the full Story >>

Insight: Scams You Should Watch Out For

Scams targeted at photographers come and go, and you need to be on guard. Photofocus runs through a number of the most common, from “Fake Jobs” scams to “Claim to Fame” scams (in which companies or individuals claim they'll make you famous or get you instant work in exchange for an upfront fee.) If you believe you are a target of a fraud, stop engaging. Report the case to the Federal Trade Commission by calling their hotline 877-382-4357 or file an online complaint. Exhibitions: Charles Lee's Black Cowboys at SF Camerawork

It was around 2018 that the current wave of interest in Black cowboys began, says Oakland-based photographer Charles Lee. But Lee first started spending time with Black ranchers a couple of years earlier, notes the Briish Journal of Photography. Lee’s photographs are featured in the exhibition “Sweat & Dirt” at San Francisco’s SF Camerawork through February 3. “My work is about agency,” he says. “That is very important in the arts, making sure that the subjects are being viewed how they want to be viewed.”   Read the full Story >>
