Japanese artist Kensuke Koike takes vintage portraits from thrift stores and flea markets — many bought in and around Venice, where he is now based — and meticulously cuts them with a small blade to rearrange their elements, producing surreal results. “I have only one chance to cut the original photo. So before I cut, I always do many, many tests before,” he says. “Everything must be perfect. Sometimes it is only (cutting) one line — but for me, it’s very emotional.” His work can be seen at LA's Rose Gallery through Jan. 13.

Polaroid has released a limited-edition Black & Yellow Duochrome film in both 8×10 and 600 formats. The 8×10 Duochrome Yellow marks Polaroid’s debut of a limited-edition film in the larger format, notes DIY Photography. The film is compatible with Polaroid I-2 cameras, 600 cameras, and i-Type cameras, “[I]t looks like it’s flying off the shelves despite being pricier than Polaroid’s regular instant film. Over the past 60 years, Josef Koudelka has taken on a remarkable range of photographic subjects, from his early theater work to his seminal project on the Roma and his legendary coverage of the 1968 Soviet invasion of Prague. The new Rizzoli book Josef Koudelka: Next is a “visual biography” of the photographer by writer, editor, and curator Melissa Harris. The Guardian calls the book “a thorough and informative overview of his life and work” that is rich in personal ephemera, from family portraits to glimpses of his many journals.

There is no shortage when it comes to political scandals. But the new scandal involving Mayra Flores, who served one term in the House of Representatives and is a current Republican congressional candidate for District 34 in South Texas, is unique. Conservative website Current Revolt published a story stating that Flores had lifted someone else’s photos of traditional Mexican dishes and passed them off as her own. But, notes the Los Angeles Times, the Mexican “gorditas de masa” Flores appeared take credit for turned out to be Guyanese sada roti.
