Passings: Kishin Shinoyama, Photographer of Iconic John Lennon-Yoko Ono Photo, Dies at 83

Japanese photographer, Kishin Shinoyama, who took one of the last pictures of John Lennon with Yoko Ono,  died Jan. 4, at the age of 83, notes the BBC.  Shinoyama spent five days with the couple in 1980, and his photograph of them kissing was used on the cover of their album “Double Fantasy.” It was also one of the last photos of Lennon, taken three months before he was murdered outside his Manhattan apartment building on December 8, 1980. "I think it was their happiest moment,” said the Tokyo-born Shinoyama, who was also noted for his nudes of women.   Read the full Story >>

Vote Now: Wildlife Photographer 'People's Choice' Award

There is still time to vote  for your favorite image to win the Wildlife Photographer of the Year ‘People’s Choice’ Award—voting closes on Jan. 31. The breathtaking 25 images shortlisted for the prize were chosen by London’s Natural History Museum and an international judging panel from 49,957 entries from 95 countries. The winner and top four images will be announced in February 2024 and displayed online, joining the winners of the 59th competition announced last year. Tech News: The Sony a9 III's Global Shutter Comes with an Image Quality Cost. So What?

Is there any image quality cost to adopting a global shutter sensor? “The short answer is: yes,” notes DP Review after testing Sony’s new a9 III—the first full-frame camera to feature a global shutter. (The global shutter allows the camera to expose every pixel at the same time so there is no distortion in both stills and video, notes The Verge.) However, adds DPR, in the context of professional sports photography, the compromises that have been made may well make sense, in return for the sheer speed of capture the a9 III is capable of, both in terms of burst rate and its fast, distortion-free shutter.   Read the full Story >>

Exhibitions: Shirin Neshat's 'Fury' Takes a New Form

For 30 years, Shirin Neshat has made lens-based art that takes the theocratic politics of her native Iran as its starting point, using song, dance and dream to imagine futures beyond segregation and repression, notes the British Journal of Photography. Her acclaimed series “Women of Allah” (1993-7) saw her make portraits of veiled women holding assault rifles. Her project “The Fury” — a set of nude portraits and dance-inspired film on view at Fotografiska Stockholm through Feb. 18 — “unveils the woman,” she says.   Read the full Story >>
