Many camera manufacturers choose to support, or at least turn a blind eye to, third-party lens makers. Canon, on the other hand has taken a stance to deny third-party manufacturers access to its RF mount. In Focus: He Broke Into Communist Hungary's Prisons

When photojournalist Tamas Urban sent a request to document life inside the Aszod juvenile detention center in the early 1970s, he had little hope of gaining access. No one with a camera had gone behind behind the high walls of the correctional facility near Budapest, Hungary. But, notes Radio Free Europe, the newspaper Urban worked for at the time was the mouthpiece for the local branch of Hungary’s communist government, and he was allowed in. Honor Roll: The DPG Masters Underwater Imaging Competition

Dive Photo Guide (DPG) recently announced the winners of its 2023 photography competition, including Marco Gargiulo’s image "The Passenger,” which features a jellyfish giving a ride to a juvenile imperial blackfish along in waters off Castellammare di Stabia, Naples, Campania, Italy. Gargiulo’s “over/under” image also features snow-topped Mount Vesuvius in the distant background. “It’s not often you see snow on the Vesuvius volcano here in the Gulf of Naples, where I live in Sorrento,” notes the photographer.   Read the full Story >>

Legal Brief: Photographer Sues Detroit Lions Over Image Used to Create Barry Sanders Statue

On Sunday, the Detroit Lions won an NFL playoff game for the first time since 1992, topping the LA. Rams 24-23. But in court they’re facing another battle, notes M Live, which reports that longtime sports photographer Allen Kee has sued the Lions, claiming the organization used his photo without permission in designing a new statue of famed running back Barry Sanders. The statue, which was unveiled outside of Detroit's Ford Field in September, was based on a photo taken of Sanders by Kee during a Sept. 3, 1995, Lions game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the suit claims.   Read the full Story >>
