The A.I. industry this year is set to be defined by one main characteristic in the year ahead, notes The New York Times: a remarkably rapid improvement of the technology as advancements build upon one another, enabling A.I. to generate new kinds of media, mimic human reasoning in new ways and seep into the physical world through a new breed of robot. In the coming months, A.I.-powered image generators like DALL-E and Midjourney will instantly deliver videos as well as still images. Books: Photographing Lebanon, from Beauty to Bombs

“Since the explosion I feel like a glass of water that overflows constantly,” wrote Lebanese photographer Myriam Boulos on August 20, 2020, after a blast created by the ignition of large amounts of seized ammonium nitrate destroyed a large part of the port of Beirut, leaving more than 200 people dead. In her debut book, What’s Ours, Boulos traces turmoil in Lebanon from 2013 to 2023, as corruption, an economic crisis and conflicts over women’s rights pitched the population against its government, notes CNN.   Read the full Story >>

In Focus: Ukraine Pro Photo Association Opposes Russian Juror at World Press Photo

THE KYIV INDEPENDENT   Wednesday January 17, 2024

The Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers has called on World Press Photo to exclude Russian photographer Maria Gelman from the jury of its 2024 contest, notes The Kyiv Independent. “The UAPP considers the participation of Gelman as irrational, and it could also influence the objectivity of the decision-making process during the evaluation of the works,” the Ukrainian association wrote in its official statement. World Press Photo notes  at its website that Gelman was a member of VII Photo Agency who has won several awards, including the Leica Oskar Barnack Award.   Read the full Story >>
