You can join photographer Dina Litovsky and New York Times Magazine director of photography Kathy Ryan as they discuss the art of editorial photography at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 6:30 to 8:00 pm. Focusing on Litovsky’s work with Ryan, the two will discuss the challenges and importance of photojournalism and collaboration. Litovsky, whose work explores the idea of leisure, often focusing on subcultures and social gatherings, is a graduate of SVA (class of 2010).

Getting a pure white background doesn’t require post-production. You can do it in camera, but, notes The Phoblographer, it’s a lot easier to do with flash than it is with LED lights. What you’ll need: a white background with a lot of lighting control (ideally, you’ll use a box with a white interior); a flash with a large diffuser like a softbox; a beauty dish; and possibly another flash. To get the background to appear purely white, it needs to be brighter than the subject you’re photographing.

In the towns surrounding Kruger National Park, in northeast South Africa, many Black residents have gone their entire lives without seeing some of the country’s most famous wildlife. But notes CNN, a Black-run program called Wild Shots Outreach (WSO) has spent the last eight years attempting to change that. Connecting with local schools, the organization is introducing young Black South Africans to photography and conservation through workshops and game drives. The program is starting to look beyond South Africa as well.
