The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund has announced that Argentinian photographer Irina Werning is the recipient of this year’s $30,000 W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography for her project “Las Pelilargas.” Since 2006, Werning has been photographing women in Argentina with long hair, a style that is influenced by a blend of South American cultures and indigenous traditions. With the grant, she will she will go on to document the impact of globalization on local traditions.

A federal appeals court has ruled against the grunge rock group Nirvana, reviving a lawsuit about the band’s use of a naked baby on the cover of its 1991 album “Nevermind.” Spencer Elden, who as a baby appeared on the album cover, filed a lawsuit in 2021, saying he was a victim of child sexual abuse imagery. A district court judge ruled that the complaint had not been filed within the 10-year statute of limitations. But, notes The New York Times, a three-judge panel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit reversed that decision, finding that “each republication” of an image “may constitute a new personal injury.”

Founded by the New York-based photographer, publisher and professor Matthew Leifheit in 2010, Matte magazine was originally supposed to be a niche publication focusing on the work of emerging photographers. But its current issue is its most ambitious yet, notes AnOther. Co-edited with Eve Lyons, a photo editor at The New York Times, the “Exciting Photography Now” issue features a “dazzling, unpredictable survey of 80 lesser-known and more established contemporary American photographers” spread over 480 pages, adds AnOther.
