Tech News: What Sony's Gridline Update Tells Us About Photography's Future

Sony recently announced that users will be able to create and import up to four customized original gridlines for its Alpha line of cameras, starting next March. The a7 IV will be the first camera to have access to the update. The gridline update may help portrait, commercial and business clients produce large batches of consistent images, but you will have to pay $150 to activate it. In Focus: Reuters Says Photographer Was Killed by Israeli Tank

An Israeli tank crew killed a Reuters journalist and wounded six reporters in Lebanon on Oct. 13 by firing two shells in quick succession from Israel while the journalists were filming cross-border shelling, a Reuters investigation has found. The strikes killed Reuters visuals journalist Issam Abdallah, 37, and severely wounded Agence France-Presse photographer Christina Assi, 28, just over a kilometre from the Israeli border near the Lebanese village of Alma al-Chaab, Reuters spoke to forensics experts, witnesses and gathered evidence from the scene.   Read the full Story >>

State of the Art: Meta's New AI Image Generator was Trained on Instagram and Facebook Images

The old saying "If you're not paying for it, you are the product" has taken on a whole new meaning, notes Ars Technica, which reports that Meta’s newly released free standalone AI image-generator website was trained on 1.1 billion publicly visible Facebook and Instagram images. Called "Imagine with Meta AI,” the image generator is based on Meta’s Emu image-synthesis model and can render a novel image from a written prompt. Previously, Meta's version of this technology—using the same data—was only available in messaging and social networking apps such as Instagram.   Read the full Story >>
