European Union negotiators have reached a provisional deal on landmark rules governing the use of artificial intelligence. With the political agreement, the EU moves toward becoming the first major world power to enact laws governing AI, notes Reuters. The accord requires foundation models such as ChatGPT and general purpose AI systems to comply with transparency obligations before they are put on the market. These include drawing up technical documentation, complying with EU copyright law and disseminating detailed summaries about the content used for training.

Magnum Photos has issued a statement at Medium calling “for an end to the killing of journalists and to any threats to media covering the Israeli bombardment in Gaza and Lebanon, and the escalating violence in the region.” In the occupied West Bank, Magnum adds, Israeli forces arrested at least 19 journalists — mostly during raids on their homes. The statement also notes that Israeli journalists are “working amid personal loss and in a climate of worsening press freedom."

Getty Images has announced it is partnering with AI startup Runway to launch a new video model for enterprise customers in what it calls “ready and safe ways.” Getty says the partnership “will combine the power of Runway with Getty Images’s world-class fully licensed creative content library.” Essentially, notes Axios, the partnership is designed to target businesses that want to combine their intellectual property with an AI engine without fear of copyright lawsuits.
