Hungary’s government determined in late October that five photos on display at the prestigious World Press Photo exhibition in Budapest violated the law restricting children’s access to content that depicts homosexuality or gender change. Viewing was restricted to people over 18. Now, reports AP, the director of the Hungarian National Museum, Laszlo L. Simon, has been fired from his job. The crackdown is part of a steady shift in Hungary toward using LGBTQ issues as a tool to mobilize voters in a country that remains highly conservative, adds The New York Times.

The winners of the ninth annual Paris Photo-Aperture Book Awards have been announced: Critic Vince Aletti’s book The Drawer wins the Photobook of the Year prize. “This phenomenal publication offers special insight into one person’s unique commitment to collecting, curating and archiving imagery in public circulation over several decades,” noted juror Renée Mussai. Photographer Carla Williams’s book Tender wins the First Photobook award. The Photography Catalog of the Year award goes to The Public Life of Women: A Feminist Memory Project.
