One of the art world’s top magazine editors was fired Thursday night after the publishers of Artforum said that the staff’s decision to post an open letter about the Israel-Hamas War failed to meet the organization’s standards. The editor in chief, David Velasco, said he had been terminated after six years as Artforum’s leader, noted The New York Times. The letter, which went live on October 19, called for a ceasefire in Gaza “and the end of the complicity of our governing bodies in grave human rights violations and war crimes,” adds ARTnews. Another editor later resigned and several prominent artists, including photography Nan Goldin, said they would boycott the publication unless Velasco was reinstated.

We noted recently that the war between Israel and Hamas has led to the death of a number of journalists—a number that has since grown: At least 24 journalists are among the more than 6,000 people who have been killed in the ongoing war, according to a recent report released by the Committee to Protect Journalists. The recent fighting has resulted in the deadliest stretch for journalists in Israel and the occupied territories since the committee began tracking journalist deaths in 1992. A committee spokesman tells NPR the number of deaths is “unprecedented.”
