State of the Art: This New Tool Lets Artists Protect Work from AI

From Hollywood strikes to digital portraits, AI's potential to steal creatives' work and how to stop it has dominated the tech conversation in 2023, but, notes Engadget, there’s a new tool to help creators protect their work. Called Nightshade, the tool, developed by a team at the University of Chicago, allows artists to add undetectable pixels into their work that could corrupt an AI's training data. Nightshade essentially works as a poison, altering how a machine-learning model produces content and what that finished product looks like. Honor Roll: See the 2023 PhotoBook Awards Shortlist

Thirty-five titles have been shortlisted for the 2023 Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards, which recognizes excellence in three major categories of photo book publishing: First PhotoBook, PhotoBook of the Year, and Photography Catalog of the Year. Among the nominees for PhotoBook of the Year: critic Vince Aletti’s The Drawer, a scrapbook celebration of the beauty of photography and the printed page. Trending: Dozens of States Sue Meta Over Addictive Features Harming Kids

More than 30 states have filed a federal lawsuit against Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, alleging the platforms’ apps are designed to be addictive and harm children’s mental health. The suit, signed by 33 state attorneys general, claims Meta violated both federal children’s online privacy law and state consumer protection laws by making its products addictive and then lying about how they harm children’s mental health, notes Politico. Additionally, eight state attorneys general and the District of Columbia are filing separate lawsuits alleging Meta’s practices violate state consumer protection laws.   Read the full Story >>
