With summer gone, the Milky Way’s core has slipped below the horizon for the next six months in the Northern Hemisphere. Don’t despair, however. Winter months bring opportunities for astonishing night-sky photography, says Jeroen Linnenkamp of the StarScaper YouTube channel. In winter, for instance, the Orion constellation rises. (Look for it early in the morning and rising earlier in the evening as we near winter.) There’s also the Geminids meteor shower in late December—and much more.

Cleveland Lindley has spent much of the past 28 years in and out of solitary confinement. He was sentenced to 105 years at age 25 for robbing a McDonald’s, his third offense. Four years ago, he requested a transfer to the California Institution for Men in Chino, which is where New York Times reporter Carmilla Floyd and photojournalist Joseph Rodriguez encountered him while working on a story about the lives of elderly prisoners. Between 1993 and 2013, the number of people 55 or older in state prisons increased by 400 percent, notes Floyd.

Meta will now let you block Instagram from collecting your data across the apps and websites you visit, reports The Verge. The company says that it is expanding the ability to disable this kind of tracking to Instagram, allowing you to review which businesses are sharing information with Meta, disconnect specific activity, or clear the collected information. You can now find this feature, called Activity Off-Meta Technologies, within the platform’s Accounts Center. It was previously only available for Facebook. Read the full Story >>

French-Swiss photographer Thaddé Comar is the winner of top prize in the photography category of the Hyeres fashion festival in France, notes Fashion Network. Photographer Souleymane Bachir Diaw, from Senegal, won the American Vintage prize, and Kin Coedel, from Hong Kong, won the public's prize in the 38th edition of the festival, which has been spotlighting new fashion talent since 1989.
