Art News: Your NFTs Are Now Officially Worthless

A team of researchers have crunched the numbers to explain why you don’t see people hawking NFTs on the internet anymore: Once vaunted as a revolution in crypto and digital art, they now are largely worthless, notes ART News. The researchers, from dappGambl, a community of experts in finance and blockchain technology, analyzed 73,257 NFT collections and found that 69,795 have a market cap of zero Ether (ETH), the second most-popular cryptocurrency behind Bitcoin. State of the Art, 2: AI Image of 'Tank Man' Tops Google Search

Can AI re-write history? The Tiananmen Square “Tank Man” photograph taken by AP photographer Jeff Widener is one of the most iconic images of the 20th century, but a recent Google search for “Tank Man” brought up an AI-generated image as the feature picture, notes PetaPixel. Google has since deleted the AI image, which appeared at the very top of regular Google searches. The image in question shows a Chinese man taking a selfie in front of a tank, it was posted to the Midjourney sub-Reddit — a forum specifically made to post AI images.   Read the full Story >>

State of the Art, 1: E.U. Law Sets the Stage for a Clash Over Disinformation

A new European Union law could force the world’s social media platforms to do more to fight disinformation, or else face fines of up to 6 percent of a company’s revenue, notes The New York Times. The law, the Digital Services Act, is intended to force social media giants to adopt new policies and practices to address accusations that they routinely host — and, through their algorithms, popularize — corrosive content. The legislation has set the stage for a clash with Elon Musk, the owner of X/Twitter, which, according to the E.U., is the worst spreader of disinformation (see TechCrunch).   Read the full Story >>

Honor Roll: International Photography Awards Winners

The International Photography Awards has announced the winners of its 2023 edition, including Advertising, Analog, Architecture, Book, Editorial, Event, Fine Art, Nature, Sport, People, and Special Photography categories. The Editorial Press Photographer of the Year title goes to Wolfgang Schwan for coverage of the Ukraine war. “In early January, 2022 I traveled to eastern Ukraine for the first time with the intention of covering an environmental story.
