Passings: Bruce Weaver, Who Photographed the Challenger Disaster, Dies at 77

Bruce Weaver, a Florida-based photographer who captured a definitive image of the space shuttle Challenger breaking apart into plumes of smoke and fire after liftoff, died on Oct. 6 at age 77, notes AP.  A statement released by the North Brevard Funeral Home said Weaver died in his sleep. Working as a freelance photographer for Associated Press, Weaver was among hundreds of witnesses at the Kennedy Space Center who saw the Challenger disintegrate 73 seconds into its flight. At a time when film was still being used, Weaver had not filled up the 36 frames on his roll by the time the shuttle started breaking apart, while other photographers who had gone through their film needed to rewind the roll before inserting a new roll of film.   Read the full Story >>

Books: Moises Saman and the Narrative of War

Twenty years ago, Moises Saman was working in Iraq as a photojournalist during the U.S.-led invasion and occupation. His new book, Glad Tidings of Benevolence, combines photographs he took at the time and over following years with disparate documentation and texts that, notes publisher GOST,  raise questions about the complex representation of war. “To articulate the past historically does not mean to recognize it ‘the way it really was,’” Saman notes in the book. State of the Art: Adobe Will Pay You $60 For Photos of Bananas

AI image generators are only as good as the images used to teach them what the real world is supposed to look like, notes The Messenger, and to improve Firefly, Adobe's in-house AI image generator included in design tools like Photoshop, the company is asking photographers for various images, including photos of bananas. Adobe Stock has put a call out for 1,000 photos of bananas to help train its AI image generator — and the company is offering $60, adds PetaPixel,  which calls the request “an insight into the future of stock photography.”   Read the full Story >>

Exhibitions: "Robert Frank and Todd Webb: Across America, 1955"

In 1955, two photographers, Robert Franks and Todd Webb, received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation to document life in the U.S. Frank’s cross-country trip by car would result in the celebrated book The Americans. Webb was awarded a grant to walk, boat, and bike across the United States to depict “vanishing Americana, and the way of life that is taking its place.” Now for the first time their work is being brought together in the exhibition "Robert Frank and Todd Webb: Across America, 1955," at Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts through Jan. 7.   Read the full Story >>
