A federal judge in Washington, D.C., has ruled that artwork generated by artificial intelligence is not eligible for copyright protection because it lacks “human involvement,” reaffirming a March decision of the United States copyright office. The ruling by Judge Beryl A. Howell of the US District Court for the District of Columbia is the first in the US to establish boundaries on legal protections for AI-generated art, notes Art News. Howell agreed with the US Copyright Office’s decision to deny grant copyright protections to an artwork created by computer scientist Stephen Thaler using “Creativity Machine,” an AI system of his own design.

World Sports Photography Awards Monday August 28, 2023
Getty Images photographer Patrick Smith is the overall winner of the 2023 World Sports Photography Awards for his photo “Sky Drive,” a shot of a golfer who seems to be swinging amid clouds. More than 700 professional photographers from over 70 countries submitted their images to this year’s World Sports Photography Awards, the only global photo competition exclusively for sports photography. Among the other standout winning images: photographer Scott Barbour’s shot of tennis star Coco Gauff’s shadow.
