In December 2018, Peter Ash Lee travelled to South Korea’s Jeju Island to photograph women divers called the Haenyo who have for centuries been the main breadwinners for their families. Most of the women, who are between 60 and 80 years old, spend hours in the open sea without any modern diving equipment, notes AnOther. The result is the book The Last Mermaid. The work is also on view at “Where Land Meets Sea,” a group exhibition at Stroll Garden in East Hampton, New York through September 4.

Meta is finally launching a web version of its “Twitter killer” app Threads: Users will be able to access the microblogging platform by logging-into its website from their computers. The widely anticipated roll out could help Threads gain broader acceptance among power users like brands, company accounts, advertisers and journalists, who can now take advantage of the platform by using it on a bigger screen, notes Reuters. Threads, which crossed 100 million sign-ups for the app within five days of its launch on July 5, saw a decline in its popularity as users returned to the more familiar platform X/Twitter after the initial rush.

Photographer Patrice Quillard wins the title of Absolute Winner in the 2023 edition of the Black and White Photo Awards for his image “My Copyright,” a portrait of a primate etched in startling monochromatic detail. “Suddenly and for a brief moment, he turned towards me, looked at me intensely and I understood the full force of his dominance over his troops. It was an unforgettable moment for me, exactly what I was looking to bring out through a photograph,” Quillard says of the photo.
