Simpson Kalisher, a onetime commercial photographer who emerged as a discerning photojournalist whose street scenes froze the panorama of urban American life in the 1950s and ’60s, died on June 13 at his home in Delray Beach, Florida, notes The New York Times. He was 96. Kalisher “was one of the last survivors of that generation of dynamic New York street photographers born in the 1920s and employed at first by the magazines, a group that included Robert Frank, Diane Arbus and Gary Winogrand,” said Lucy Sante, who wrote the foreword to Kalisher’s 2011 book The Alienated Photographer.

Khortytsia, a lush island on the Dnipro River just outside the southern city of Zaporizhzhia—and not far from the front lines of Ukraine’s war with Russia—was once a headquarters for the Zaporizhzhian Cossacks, 17th century warriors revered in Ukraine for their insistence on freedom and self-governance. Today, notes NPR in a report featuring photography from Claire Harbage, Cossack traditions live on in Ukraine. “The Zaporizhzhian Cossacks never submitted to anybody,” says Cossack descendant Andrii Lozovyi.

X Corp., the parent company of the app formerly known as Twitter, is suing the Center for Countering Digital Hate, a nonprofit that conducts research on social media, notes The Guardian. Twitter has accused the organization of making “a series of troubling and baseless claims that appear calculated to harm Twitter generally, and its digital advertising business specifically.” Meanwhile, Twitter also recently restated the account of Kanye West, who had been suspended for antisemitic posts.

iPhone Photography Awards Monday August 7, 2023
Ivan Silva of Mexico is the grand prize winner of the 2023 iPhone Photography Awards for his image “Heroe,” which features a boy standing on the back of a truck with his arms outstretched. The photo was made with an iPhone 12 Pro. The IPPAWARDS is the first and longest-running iPhone photography competition; this year’s competition, the 16th, includes winners in 14 categories. The First Place Photographer of the Year Award goes to Thea Mihu of Germany for her image “Soy Sauce Village,” shot in Hng Yên province, Vietnam, on an iPhone 12 Pro Max.
