Photography is important because of how it works — not only as an artistic medium but also as a way of knowing. So notes author Jerry L. Thompson in his book Why Photography Matters, from MIT Press. The MIT Press Reader presents an excerpt. “Studio artists today use cameras to generate the pictorial raw materials they need in order to create works expressive of their individual talents and personal visions,” writes Thompson. “For a studio artist, the camera is a source of material. Art News: Dallas Center of Photography Closes

The Dallas Center of Photography closed on Aug. 4, due in part to financial challenges made worse by the pandemic, notes The Art Newspaper. Founded in 2009 as a for-profit organization focused on photo-based education, the DCP transitioned to non-profit status in 2019. Following the pandemic, the immediate plan was to downsize, but rents were too high in the city, notes the Dallas Morning News. “Another thing Dallas doesn’t have, and this is a very common complaint among nonprofits, is there’s no place for nonprofits to live,” says Executive Director Peter Poulides.   Read the full Story >>

Dept. of Ideas: Blind Date Photo Shoots

On a recently Wednesday, Autumn McElroy and Justice Cox were waiting in a Tyler, Texas, parking lot to meet each other for the first time. They were brought together on a blind date by the owner of a local photography business, Anita McElroy, who’d posted an advertisement on Facebook for people interested in a unique photoshoot, notes KYTX. McElroy decided to spice up her photo business with matchmaking out of a sense of romance—and savvy marketing.
