John Fielder, an esteemed Colorado-based landscape photographer best known for his Colorado 1870-2000 book series, died on Aug. 11 after a battle with cancer, notes KDVR. He was 73. In the Colorado 1870-2000series, Fielder matched photos taken by William Henry Jackson more than 100 years prior. “In all my life, I have not forgotten my first sight of the Rockies rising up before me over the plains,” he wrote on his website. “I was simply smitten by this wall of snow-capped peaks above a treeless plain.”

In 2021, Meta, which was then called Facebook, introduced Ray Ban Stories—Ray Ban-designed smart glasses with two 5 MP front-facing cameras for snapping pictures or video, and speakers for listening to audio. Today the people who shelled out $300 for the glasses don’t use them. Citing internal data, The Wall Street Journal reported recently that users complained of problems with the smart glasses' voice commands, audio, connectivity, and hardware features. Despite Stories' lackluster performance, Meta is reportedly continuing with plans for a second-generation pair that will arrive this fall or in the spring, notes Ars Technica.

Global Image of the Year Scientific Light Microscopy Award Wednesday August 16, 2023
Laurent Formery’s photo of the nervous system of a juvenile sea star (Patiria miniata) is the winner of the Global Image of the Year Scientific Light Microscopy Award — an annual competition presented by EVIDENT (formerly Olympus Scientific Solutions) and Olympus to encourage people to appreciate the beauty of scientific images. Formery’s starfish (about one centimeter across) was labeled with an antibody against acetylated tubulin after optical clearing, and captured using a color-coded Z-projection, notes the competition.
