Now accepting submissions, the Lucie Photo Book Prize is a juried competition open to a diversity of work, from published to prototype to hand-made books. The awards will be presented to photographers, editors, curators or publishers who have created these types of projects anywhere in the world from June 2021 to September 2023. There are two cash prizes, the Traditional prize ($3,000) and the Independent prize ($2,000). Deadline for submissions is Aug. 30.

Marie-Laure de Decker, a one-time French model who stepped behind the camera to become an internationally recognized war photographer, died on July 15 at the age of 75, reports France 24. “She went off on her own to the Vietnam War in 1970, photographed the hostage Françoise Claustre in Chad and lived in Chile and South Africa during apartheid before developing a passion for the Wodaabe, a nomadic tribe of the Fula,” notes Le Monde. “There is an advantage to being a woman, as was the case in South Africa — they don't kill you right away, they give you a chance,” she once said.

Comedy Pet Photography Awards Monday July 24, 2023
Silly pets doing silly things is a surefire recipe for a smile and a photo. The 25 finalists for the 2023 Comedy Pet Photography Awards have been announced, and the winners will be announced on Aug. 11. (In the meantime, you can the vote for the People's Choice Award.) The competition was created by pro photographers Paul Joynson-Hicks and Tom Sullam, who already ran the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards, to celebrate the vital role that pets have in our lives and to encourage engagement around animal welfare.
