The Toronto Zoo is advising its visitors to avoid showing videos and photos on their cellphones to its gorillas because they distract the apes, reports CTV News. "We just want the gorillas to be able to be gorillas," Hollie Ross, behavioral husbandry supervisor at the zoo, said in an interview. Ross said one of the zoo’s gorillas, Nassir, has become enthralled with videos visitors are showing him. “I think, mostly, he was seeing videos of other animals. But, I think what is really important is that he's able to just hang out with his brother and be a gorilla,” Ross says.

Pinault Collection Thursday July 27, 2023
French billionaire Francois Pinault may be the world’s foremost collector of photography by Irving Penn, notes Matthieu Humery, photography advisor to the Pinault Collection of art. The exhibition “Irving Penn. Artists’ Portraits. Photographs from the Pinault Collection,” at the Villa Les Roches Brunes in Dinard, France (through October 1) features 74 of Penn’s portraits of artists, some exhibited for the first time, notes Blind magazine. The Pinault Collection calls the show “a gallery of the faces of those who embodied much of the creation of the last century.”

The University of Pennsylvania Libraries has acquired a collection of photographs by Leandre K. Jackson, known for his vibrant candid shots depicting Black life in Philadelphia and elsewhere around the world, as well as his striking portraits of eminent Black cultural figures, writers, and musicians. The Penn Libraries will preserve and provide access to the photographs with the guidance of curator Samantha Hill. The photographs acquired by Penn are a product of Jackson’s decades-long collaboration with historian James G. Spady.

The new book Breathing Space: Iranian Women Photographersl ooks at Iraq “through the lenses of 23 women photographers, at a moment in history when Iranian women are fighting for their rights with courage and determination,” notes publisher Thames & Hudson. “Iran’s long history has seen many dictatorships and invaders, and much repression, so its art is traditionally indirect, using metaphor and symbols to say things that are otherwise outlawed or unacceptable,” declares The Guardian, which spotlights the book.
