Passings: Mikala Jones, Surfer Known for Photography Inside Waves, Dies at 44

Mikala Jones, a professional surfer known for his photography and videos filmed from inside the tubes of breaking waves, has died on July 9 after an accident while he was surfing in Indonesia, reports The New York Times. His father, John Jones, said that his son, 44, was out on the waves during a trip to the Mentawai Islands off the western coast of Sumatra when the fin on his surfboard sliced his femoral artery. Jones made some of the sport’s best point-of-view videos using techniques that he had worked on for more than a decade, including board-mounted cameras and rigs he held in his hand, before he started a collaboration with GoPro.   Read the full Story >>

Industry News: Instax is One of Fujifilm's Most Valuable Product Lines

What cameras do people want? Fujifilm has revealed that its Instax instant camera line is one of the most important for its entire imaging division and accounts for a majority of sales, notes PetaPixel. Square-format instant film has shown a huge leap in popularity over the years: As revealed in Fujifilm’s 2022 financial report, Instax-related products account for the majority of Fujifilm’s Consumer Imaging Segment, which had sales of 266.9 billion yen in 2022, an increase of 22 percent over the previous year. This segment accounts for 65 percent of the sales in the entire Imaging Business division, which includes all of Fujifilm’s cameras.   Read the full Story >>

As Ukrainian troops inch forward in the counteroffensive, they are occupying positions abandoned by enemy troops—trench lines, bunkers and firing positions in abandoned buildings. Before leaving, the Russians had little time to clear abandoned clothing, body armor, ponchos, bedding and leftover military rations of their enemy, notes The New York Times in a report featuring front-line photographs by David Guttenfelder. “It’s our land but it’s not very comfortable to be here.
