Passings: Lisl Steiner, Flamboyant Photojournalist, Dies at 95

Photojournalist Lisl Steiner, who shot intimate images of history-making figures like Fidel Castro, John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as luminaries of music, stage and sports, died on June 7 in Mount Kisco, N.Y., reports The New York Times. She was 95. Shooting for publications including Newsweek, Time, Life and National Geographic, Steiner was known for her flamboyant attire, her explosion of fiery red hair, her sassy personality and her uncanny knack for connecting with her subjects, whom she jokingly referred to as “victims,” notes The Times.   Read the full Story >>

Exhibitions: Evelyn Hofer Was a 'Total Perfectionist'

Evelyn Hofer, who died aged 87 in 2009, is one of those quiet but accomplished photographers whose importance has taken considerable time to accrue, notes The Guardian, which spotlights a Hofer retrospective on view at The Photographers’ Gallery in London. The exhibition features the German-American photographer’s  “characteristically considered, large-format portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, still lifes and domestic interiors, many of which demonstrate her preference for the complex colour dye transfer process,” notes the gallery.   Read the full Story >>

Art News: Gagosian Hires a Veteran Photography Curator for New Director Role

As we noted recently, big galleries are going in for photography these days. Now Artnet reports that the Gagosian Gallery is doubling down on photography by anointing a dedicated director to a newly created role at the helm of that department. Joshua Chuang, who will officially join the gallery this month, previously held curatorial and leadership positions at the New York Public Library, the Center for Creative Photography, and Yale University Art Gallery. Chuang will oversee a global strategy for engaging with and exhibiting artists working with the photographic medium.   Read the full Story >>

Honor Roll: The Independent Photographer's Portrait Winners

The art of portrait photography is celebrated with the Portrait Competition from The Independent Photographer, a global community of photography enthusiasts. First place goes to Jorg Karg for his photo “Far Away Thunder.” Says Karg: “The intention behind my digital photographic collages is to make the beholder feel addressed immediately, without any further explanation.
