Industry News: Meta Sells Giphy to Shutterstock (and Loses Millions)

Three years ago, Meta paid $400 million for Giphy, the main supplier of animated gifs to social networks such as Snapchat, TikTok and Twitter. Now, Meta has sold Giphy to Shutterstock for $50 million. The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority had ordered the sale in November 2021, after determining Meta's acquisition of Giphy would harm competition in social media and advertising. Last September, Meta appealed to the CMA to try to prevent the sale, noting that gifs have fallen out of fashion as a content form, “with younger users in particular describing gifs as 'for boomers.’”   Read the full Story >>

A paparazzi photographer is suing Kanye West over an alleged incident in which the rapper grabbed her phone and threw it into traffic, reports Billboard. The photographer, Nichol Lechmanik, alleges that West reached into her car and “ripped her phone out of her hands” before throwing it “onto the street towards oncoming traffic” during the Jan. 27 incident outside the Sports Academy in Newbury Park, Calif.
