At a time when cultural taste is an individualized value, the idea of an absolute authority feels distant. But for a time, notes the British Journal of Photography, Condé Nast’s Vogue and Vanity Fair magazines occupied this position of influence. The exhibition “Chronorama,” at the Palazzo Grassi = in Venice, Italy (through July 1) features 407 photographs drawn from the Condé Nast archive — images that not only documented culture but also asserted the publisher’s wider role in the public sphere.   Read the full Story >>

State of the Art: France Wants to Jail Influencers Who Don't Disclose Photoshop

The lower chamber of the French parliament, the National Assembly, has passed a bill that aims to crack down on scams and misleading posts by social media influencers, reports TechCrunch. Among other things, the bill would require influencers to label images and videos that use filters or have undergone image editing in apps like Photoshop, adds PetaPixel. The bill also restricts social media influencers from promoting cosmetic surgery, financial services — including cryptocurrency — and scam products.   Read the full Story >>

Tech News: Polaroid's 'Accidental' Blue Film

“Happy accidents are what keep the world interesting, and that goes double for the unexpected gamble of instant film development.” So notes Adweek in a report about Polaroid’s newly released Reclaimed Blue 600, a striking blue-tinted film that was created by accident in a lab at the company’s only film factory in the world. Unlike other duo chrome or monochrome films that require dye, Reclaimed Blue was the unexpected result of a chemical reaction. Agenda: The 2023 ICP Photobook Fest, May 12-14

The International Center of Photography will present the ICP Photobook Fest on May 12–14 at ICP on the Lower East Side (79 Essex Street, New York). This year’s edition of the event will be bigger than last year’s successful debut, with nearly 50 leading and independent photo book publishers from more than 10 countries showcasing their latest image-based books, magazines, and zines. The event will also take over ICP’s School, with in-person conversations throughout the weekend highlighting the latest trends and releases in photo book making.
