Legal Brief: Photographer Whose Metadata Was Deleted by Client Loses Lawsuit

The Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit has ruled against a photographer who sued a hospitality tech company for removing copyright metadata from his photos before posting them on travel websites, notes the National Law Review. The photographer, Victor Elias, filed a lawsuit against Shiji Group in 2021 for distributing his photos and stripping out the embedded copyright management information (CMI) metadata from his images, adds PetaPixel. His case had earlier been dismissed by a lower court because the photographer had not shown that Shiji knew, or had reasonable grounds to know, that “its actions would induce, enable, facilitate, or conceal a copyright infringement.”   Read the full Story >>

Astrophotography: Study Shows Star Visibility Is Decreasing Rapidly

Light pollution is growing rapidly and in some places the number of stars visible to the naked eye in the night sky is being reduced by more than half in less than 20 years, according to a study run by the US National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory. Researchers used stellar observations from 2011 to 2022 submitted by more than 51,000 "citizen scientists" around the world to arrive at their conclusions, which were published in the journal Science. The change in the number of visible stars reported was equivalent to a 9.6 percent per year annual increase in sky brightness, notes Phys.org.   Read the full Story >>
