Irving Henry Webster Phillips Jr., The Baltimore Sun’s first Black news photographer, died on Dec. 22 at Loch Raven VA Medical Center, reports the newspaper. He was 79. Phillips, the son of I. Henry Phillips Sr., a newspaper photographer at The Baltimore Afro-American, and Laura Mackay Phillips, a homemaker and later the newspaper’s librarian, documented a long list of historical moments in his career, from Cal Ripken’s first home run and Johnny Unitas’ last game to riots that rocked the city in 1968.

Over the decades, critic, curator and writer Vince Aletti has amassed stacks print magazines (10,000 at least, he estimated for The New Yorker in 2019) that he lives alongside in his longtime East Village apartment. His new book, The Drawer, features 75 collages drawn from the magazine archive, as photographed by Anushila Shaw, a collaborator whom Aletti first met when she was a student at NYC’s School of Visual Arts. “I wanted as much variety in each composition as possible,” Aletti tells AnOther.

Shanghai is being gripped by China’s massive Covid wave, leading to a surge in hospitalizations and crowded funeral homes. Local health officials said last week that up to 70 percent of the city’s 26 million residents had been infected, notes The New York Times, which features a report on the crisis with photographs from Qilai Shen. China’s current wave of infections has been fueled by a lack of immunity in the population, most of which was not exposed to the coronavirus for years because of the country’s strict controls.
