Meta’s throwing more money into the metaverse with its acquisition of Luxexcel, a Netherlands-based company that specializes in 3D-printing prescription lenses for smart glasses, with the aim of creating its first augmented reality glasses. Meta is pouring about half of its metaverse-focused division’s operating expenses into augmented reality (AR), while the other half is going to building virtual reality products (VR) as it continues to bleed billions, notes The Verge.

Benjamin Simpson, a British surgeon, arrived in Qandahar, Afghanistan, in late 1880, at the end of what would become known as the Second Anglo-Afghan War. He had been sent to the strategically located city not only as a military doctor, but also as a documentary photographer, and when he left the following April, along with the rest of the British Army, he carried images of a place now lost to time—and to decades of conflict, notes Atlas Obscura. The work—the earliest known photographs of Kandahar—are now available in an immersive virtual exhibition.

Audubon Photography Awards Monday January 16, 2023
The 2023 Audubon Photography Awards are open for entries through 12 pm ET on March 1. Judges will award eight prizes to photographers and videographers: the Grand Prize, Professional Prize, Amateur Prize, Youth Prize, Plants for Birds Prize, Fisher Prize, Female Bird Prize, and Video Prize. This is the third year for the Female Bird Prize, which showcases the beauty of female birds. Female birds are often under-appreciated and under-researched in both birding and science, notes Audubon.
